Tiling Best Practices: Layout, Waterproofing, Grout, and Straight Lines That Last

Published Feb 10, 2026 • 7–9 min read

Clean tiling is never an accident. It comes from layout planning, a stable substrate, correct adhesives, and consistent spacing. Here are the steps that separate “okay” tiling from a premium finish.

1) Plan the layout before mixing adhesive

  • Dry-fit a few rows to avoid thin cuts at edges.
  • Center feature tiles on focal points (shower valve, niche, vanity).
  • Use level reference lines — walls are rarely perfectly straight.

2) Substrate and waterproofing (non-negotiable in wet areas)

Bathrooms and showers need proper waterproofing. Skipping this step is the fastest way to future problems.

  • Use appropriate boards/membranes in wet zones.
  • Seal corners, penetrations, and niches thoroughly.
  • Allow correct curing times — rushing causes failure.

3) Consistent grout lines and clean edges

  • Use quality spacers and check alignment frequently.
  • Choose grout color intentionally: contrast for pattern, or match for a seamless look.
  • Finish edges with profiles or clean mitres (where appropriate).

4) Long-term durability tips

  • Use the right adhesive for tile size and surface.
  • Ensure correct falls in shower floors (water must drain).
  • Seal natural stone when required.
